Introduction

 Visoke Tatry (High Tatras)

The Tatras is a range of mountains located at the Polish/Slovaquian border, it's the beginning of the Carpates range. The are several groups of Tatras: High Tatras (Visoke Tatri), Belianske Tatri (east), western Tatras, southern Tatrs (Nizke Tatry), .

Since 1949 it's national park (TANAP), the mountains are mainly granite and the highest peak is the Gerlachovski stit at 2654 m. Many lakes (largest is 20 ha)  and waterfalls as high as 80 m (Kmetove vodopady)

Below a view over the Krivan peak (2494 m) , which is to Slovaquian the equivalent of the Matterhorn for the swiss.

Approaching the park

1. Climbing the Krivan peak

It's an easy climb, although a bit boring and long inside the forest at the beginning. We started from Jamske Pleso, but starting from Tri Sudnicky is also possible, although less convenient in terms of access and parking.

Start to Krivan

The path climbs slowly through forests, when out of the forests it starts to climb more, below a view over the Krivan.

Closer to the top the path begins to be quite  crowded, no chance to get lost !

From the top we have a view the Polish border (below, looking roughly north)

2.  Teryo Chata (chata = refuge)

The path starts from the end of the cable car Hrebienok, passes by the Zamkovskeho Chata below.

Refuge

The path climbs into a splendid valley surrounded by impressive granite peaks.

The path climbs along a kind of cliff to reach the Teryo chata, which can be seen on the ridge just above the cascade on the picture below.

Nice refuge with good accommodation, could have been possible to go to a pass further on the left of the refuge to Sedielko (2376 m) and to go back on the other side of the mountain, making a loop via the Zbojnicka chata (1960 m) and back top Hrebienok.
